Something Different

Something Wicked This Way Comes is one of Ray Bradbury’s most famous works. As such, the cover has been designed and redesigned a dozen times. So when I began this redesign my goal was to create something different, and perhaps to entice a whole new generation to explore his work.

I began my process by really digging into the themes of the book and imagining how a young person today might be coping with those some themes.

At it’s heart Something Wicked This Way Comes is about acceptance. Taking a good hard look at yourself and deciding that you are enough.

So I chose to center the design for the front cover around the fun house mirrors. Where you can see yourself for who you are, or lose yourself chasing who you’d rather be.

I picked an illustrative cover which resembles a comic book cover and chose colors and gradients that mimicked that feel as well.

For the typeface, I chose Boucherie Sans Italic because it captures the essence of early 19th century poster design (such as one which might have advertised for a carnival rolling through town) but still maintained the clean modern look I was seeking for the update. It rides that fine line between old and new.
