All About the Curls
I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to redesign this book by local author Cynthia J. Stone. Stone wrote Carly and Star because she wanted to help young children who are dealing with bullying.
The book is about a little girl named Carly, who is teased at school for having big curly hair. She befriends a horse named Star who has big curly hair just like her.
Judging a Book by its Cover
I wanted to accomplish two things with this project. The first was to create a home made feel with the cover. I intentionally left the texture rich on both the art work and the back ground to give a feel of someone coloring with crayons. My second goal was to lean heavily into the curls. The illustrations do not hold any punches with the big curly hair and I wanted to find a typeface that really captured that.
I found Lust Script which is a beautiful loopy swirly font. It also has many open type options which allowed me to really compose the perfect look with that beautiful swirly ampersand.
